The new patient rooms at Mount Nittany Medical Center were designed with the patient in mind. With feedback from physicians, donors and employees at the Medical Center, special care was taken to ensure that the design of the rooms provides comfort, privacy and an environment of healing for patients and their families.
Special features include a one-of-a-kind articulating exam light from the head of the patient to the foot of the bed to ensure that physicians are able to have appropriate lighting specific to the needs of the patient. Rooms include porcelin-tiled restrooms that are handicapped accessible with special amenities in the shower areas for the patient. Each bed is designed with a double headwall to provide personalized care for every patient.
The community is invited to tour the new patient care rooms on July 31, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. To register and for more information, call 234.6727 or email eastwing@mountnittany.org.

Being diagnosed with cancer isn’t just about treatment – it’s about being a survivor. And being a survivor isn’t just about getting by, it’s about thriving. June is National Cancer Survivors Month. One of our country’s most visible cancer survivors, Lance Armstrong, educates the public through the Lance Armstrong Foundation, that “…a survivor is anyone battling cancer. A survivor might be the person diagnosed, a spouse, a child, a friend or any caregiver. Survivorship begins at diagnosis, the moment your battle with cancer begins.”
Whether you are a cancer survivor or know someone who is, now is the time to get involved, celebrate survivorship and get the help you need. Cancer survivors that are residents of the Centre County community have a wealth of resources at their fingertips.

The Reverend Lisa K. Schoonmaker, B. Mus., M. Div., J.D., recently joined the Mount Nittany Medical Center team as the Director of Pastoral Care. As Chaplain, she oversees a multi-faith ministry responsible for the spiritual care of the staff, patients and their families.
In addition to regular weekday office hours from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., there is a chaplain on call for emergencies 24 hours a day. Pastoral Care volunteers are trained to make initial visits to patients. All newly admitted patients receive initial visits as time allows, with every effort made to contact as many patients as possible within 72 hours of admission.

While it won’t always keep the doctor away, apples do provide some wonderful health benefits: - Apples contain phytonutrients that act as antioxidants, which help to protect tissues from oxygen-related damage.
- A 5-ounce apple has 4 grams of fiber, including cellulose and pectin. Both help to keep cholesterol under control and possibly lower high cholesterol.
- Apples also contain flavonoids, providing antioxidant protection, preventing excessive inflammation and helping to regulate blood pressure.
- In some studies, an apple a day reduced the risk of lung cancer, colon cancer and breast cancer.
Studies show that an estimated five million Americans suffer from chronic wounds each year caused by diabetes, circulatory problems and other conditions. The Mount Nittany Center for Wound Care focuses on a comprehensive approach to provide the fastest healing time in the region – nearly one week faster than the average industry healing time, which is about four to six weeks.
The Center’s integrated treatment program includes vascular assessments, cultures for infection, antibiotic management, debridement, nutrition support, topical wound care, orthotics and patient education. This approach has proven to help patients get back to their regular lives faster because it reduces the time it takes to heal problem wounds.

Most people anticipate spring and summer so they can go outside after being trapped indoors during the cold winter months. But with warmer weather comes an array of injuries caused by outdoor activities – everything from baseball to in-line skating to motorcycling.
People with sports injuries can now get faster results with Mount Nittany Medical Center’s new CT scanner, which provides better resolution and is four times faster than the previous scanner.
A CT scan helps physicians diagnose and treat medical conditions by producing multiple images or pictures of the inside of the body, including internal organs, bones, soft tissue and blood vessels to reveal more than regular X-ray exams. CT scans are often used after an injury for broken facial bones, cervical and spinal injuries, other broken bones and head injuries – all injuries that are common with spring and summer activities.
