Together Strong: New Room Designs Reflect Input from Employees and Physicians for Patient Comfort and Staff Satisfaction

Together Strong To ensure the best rooms for healing and comfort as well as employee and physician satisfaction, the Medical Center enlisted the feedback of its employees and physicians when designing the patient rooms for the east wing.

Because the physicians, nurses and other staff are the primary users of the rooms on a daily basis, their input was highly valued during the design process. With the goal of efficiency and ergonomics for staff and safety, comfort and privacy for patients, input was important from all levels.

To get feedback from employees and physicians, the Medical Center used online surveys and town hall-style presentations that introduced employees to the upcoming construction. More than 170 employees provided feedback. Based on those recommendations, two full-size patient rooms complete with bathrooms, patient beds, headboards and more were built at a local warehouse in Centre County for more opportunity for feedback.

Suspended Sculpture Offers Unique Opportunity to Give

A representation of the future statue Building on the concept of a traditional brick campaign, The Foundation for Mount Nittany Medical Center is offering a unique and uplifting way for people of the region to contribute to the Medical Center through the purchase of a piece of a uniquely designed, suspended sculpture. The sculpture, designed by Bellefonte sculptor Talley Fisher, will hang permanently in the front lobby of the Medical Center to welcome patients, families and visitors.

Fisher is using perforated, anodized aluminum in this sculpture and was inspired in its design by the logo of the Medical Center. Each element is laser or water cut, depending on the size of the element and thickness of the aluminum. The elements will then be rolled to create a three-dimensional feature. When the final piece is suspended from the ceiling, the anodized silver will enhance the aesthetics of the main lobby area, and create a skyscape of textures and visual interest.

Families Come First at the Mount Nittany Medical Center Pediatrics Unit

Pediatrics UnitThe pediatric unit, part of the Women & Children's Services (WCS) department at Mount Nittany Medical Center, is designed to serve the needs of the youngest patients and their parents.

“We know how stressful it is to have a child hospitalized, so we are very accommodating to families. We do everything we can to make the patient and family comfortable,” explained Dianne Fortson, RN, MSN and director of WCS. “For example, whenever possible, we give the parent a bed in the child’s room, and often provide some meals for the parent too. It's important that parents are well rested so they can comfort and help care for their child.”

The pediatric unit currently has a 12-bed GYN/Pediatric Unit where care is provided for newborns to patients up to 18 years of age, as well as women with post-surgical needs, such as those recovering from a hysterectomy. Nurses and other staff are cross-trained to care for pediatric patients and post-surgical patients.

Laughter Really is the Best Medicine

  • It can help to protect you against a heart attack and other cardiovascular problems by improving the function of blood vessels and increasing blood flow.
  • Laughter releases endorphins, the body’s natural feel-good chemicals, so it can temporarily relieve pain.
  • It relaxes the entire body and relieves physical tension and stress for up to 45 minutes after your first laugh.
  • Laughter increases production of immune cells and infection-fighting antibodies, which boosts your immune system and helps to prevent disease.
